Autumn 1-
Welcome back to a new academic year. I hope you have all had a wonderful break and enjoyed some family time. I am very happy to be your child’s teacher this year, and I look forward to all the adventures that await us!
In RE, we will be exploring what it means to be anti-racist and considering what it means to live in a religiously diverse world. We will be considering how our identity is different to those in our class, and how it can be different to those children in other parts of the world.
In music, we will be listening to songs from World War Two and using these as inspiration to create our own historical music. The children will also be learning to sing these songs in two parts.
In computing, the children will be learning all about Bletchley Park and The Enigma Machine. We will be computing experts by trying to break some codes and even trying to create some of our own. While in PE they will develop their skills through a range of games and invasion activities.
In PSHE, our Year 5 children will be learning about My Healthy Self and how we can look after our bodies, while Year 6 will focus on making healthy choices. This will help us prepare for life beyond primary school and teach us about some changes to expect.
In English, we have started a Strong Starts unit, based around Mr Bunny’s Chocolate Town. After this, we will also be focusing on the book Star of Fear, Star of Hope, with the children working towards an exciting writing outcome: writing a story with a flashback from another character’s point of view.
In Maths, we will begin by developing our understanding of place value, including ordering numbers, rounding, using number lines and comparing numbers. We will then move on to addition and subtraction, as well as geometry.
In History, we will be learning about the impact of World War Two on Britain, exploring its causes and considering the experiences of people during the conflict. In Art, we will investigate how drawing can express emotion, movement and depth, inspired by the work of Charlie Mackesy and Elizabeth Catlett.
Finally, in Science, we will be exploring gravity, air resistance and water resistance, investigating the effects of balanced and unbalanced forces through a range of practical and written activities.
We are looking forward to a busy, engaging and exciting term of learning in Oak Class!
